If you want to be the designer you would need to go to fashion school. Generally people do not start their own clothing lines as soon as they graduate, so you would likely want to get experience working for other people. However, once you do decide to start, you need to think about how much you are going to do yourself, and how many other people you will hire. For example, will you hire a pattern drafter, or do that yourself? Where will you contract the construction to? You also need to think about whether you are going to have your own locations of the stores, or whether your line will be sold in other stores, and how widespread you want it to be. It is a fairly long process.

If you don’t want to go to fashion school and actually learn about clothing construction and pattern drafting, then you would have to hire designers and patterndrafters to work everything out for you, because they would know everything about it and you wouldn’t. This is most likely what you want to do, but you definitely will need to hire the right people to work for you. You will need to get in contact with factories and have your designers work out the technical specifics.

You will definitely need a fairly strong business background whether you decide to open your own locations or have your line in other stores.

I hope that can help a little bit.
